Minecraft: getting started
A short path from empty slot → playable Java world. Bedrock/Geyser is a later chapter.

Pick a lane
- Vanilla / Paper — survival, plugins, most public communities. Paper (or a maintained fork) is usually the better ops choice than stock CraftBukkit.
- Fabric / Forge / NeoForge — modpacks and content packs. Don't mix “plugin server” and “modloader server” expectations.
- Version pin — set the exact Minecraft version your plugins/mods list. “Latest” is how you break production on Tuesday.
First boot checklist
- Accept the EULA when the host prompts (or edit eula.txt).
- Set online-mode=true unless you knowingly run offline/auth proxies.
- Enable whitelist before advertising the IP; add yourself as op after you join once.
- Note the query / game ports your panel exposes — open only what's required.
- Take a cold backup after the first clean start (empty world is fine; habit isn't).
Next
Stack choice → plugins & mods. Stability → performance & backups.
