Plugins & mods

Two different ecosystems. Mixing them without a plan is how worlds die.

Plugin servers (Paper family)

Best for economy, permissions (LuckPerms-style), chat, antirelief, and staff commands. Clients stay vanilla. Update plugins one at a time; read changelogs when the Minecraft minor version jumps.

Modloaders

Fabric/Forge/NeoForge change what the game can do. Everyone needs matching mods (or a curated pack). Prefer one pinned modpack version over a pile of “latest” jars from random links.

Ops hygiene

  • Keep a staging world or off-peak window for upgrades.
  • Never put secrets (database passwords, Discord webhooks) in public plugin configs on shared drives.
  • Permission nodes > giving every helper full op.
