HTML & CSS hygiene

Boring markup ages better than a div soup with inline styles everywhere.

Markup

  • One h1 per page; nest headings in order.
  • Buttons for actions, links for navigation — don't fake either with random spans.
  • Alt text for meaningful images; empty alt for decorative ones.
  • Forms need labels tied to inputs — placeholders are not labels.

CSS

  • Prefer a small token set (spacing, type, color) over one-off magic numbers.
  • Mobile first: if it only works at 1440px, it doesn't work.
  • Avoid !important wars — they usually mean specificity debt.
